Bode and Morgan Miller’s son learns to swim after daughter drowning

Morgan Miller watched her son during his swim lesson with two kinds of tears.

In an Instagram Story this week, she shared a video of 6-month-old Easton receiving an infant swim lesson.

Bode and Morgan Miller’s 19-month-old daughter Emmy drown in a neighbor’s pool in June 2018. Morgan was already pregnant with Easton.

“I cried tears of hope watching my baby boy learn this life saving skill,” Morgan Miller wrote. “And then tears of sadness because it was all I had to do to keep my baby girl here.”

Morgan wrote that Easton is taking swimming lessons for 10 minutes, five days a week.

Since Emmy’s death, the couple athletic power couple—he is a former Olympic skier and she is a professional beach volleyball player— has become strong advocates for water safety in hopes of sparing other families the pain of losing a child.

“A child under 30 pounds can drown in 30 seconds,” Beck Miller told Today. “And I just keep counting to 30 in my head. That was all I needed.”

Early swim lessons can help

The American Academy of Pediatrics updated its drowning prevention guidelines in March. Although the organization said swim lessons will not “drown proof” a child, giving kids early swim lessons can reduce drowning risks.

“Research has found that swim lessons are beneficial for children starting around age 1, and may lower drowning rates,” said Linda Quan, a co-author of the policy statement.
