Hawaii volcano before and after pictures show lava devastation

PAHOA, Hawaii – Last summer’s lava flows from Mount Kilauea destroyed an estimated 700 buildings, covered roads and reshaped the Big Island’s coastline. These before-and-after images show the changes caused by the lava, which a year later has hardened but still steams in places.

For many residents, the property loss has been compounded by their inability to return home because roads remain covered or blocked by the lava flow.

County officials say residents shouldn’t be so eager to return to their property, given how recently the lava was flowing across it, but say they’re working to restore access where possible.

The following image pairs, which you can slide between to see before and after scenes, were taken through a combination of hiking, aerial surveys and satellite images provided by Google and by DigitalGlobe, a Maxar company.
