John Bobbitt recalls ‘nightmare’ of penis being cut off

John Bobbitt still vividly remembers the “nightmare” he woke up to more than 25 years ago when he realized his wife had cut off his penis.

“I cleared my thoughts, applied pressure,” Bobbitt told ABC News in an interview to air Jan. 4. “I went to wake my friend up to tell him to get me to the hospital.”

The interview will air less than a month before “Lorena,” a four-part documentary series for Amazon, will be previewed at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

The incident took place June 23, 1993, and made headlines around the globe. Lorena Bobbitt said her then-husband had repeatedly sexually and physically abused her. She said she finally attacked him after a drunken John Bobbitt had raped her in their Virginia apartment, a claim he denied.

John Bobbitt, then 26, said a friend rushed him to a hospital within 10 minutes. Lorena Bobbitt, then 24, drove off, tossing the penis in a field. Searchers found it, and a plastic surgeon and a urologist teamed up to reattach the penis in a 9-hour operation.

“It’s normal now,” Bobbitt told ABC News. ‘I don’t want to mess with it … It’s been through the wringer.”

Lorena Bobbitt was charged with malicious wounding but found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. John Bobbitt, at a separate trial, was found not guilty of marital sexual assault.

The couple divorced in 1995.

John Bobbitt soon starred in two adult films – “Uncut” and “Frankenpenis.” Lorena Bobbitt now goes by her maiden name, Lorena Gallo. She started a foundation to help survivors of domestic violence.

“I never meant to hurt anybody,” she said at the time. “I never hurt anybody before.

“It just happened.”
