Madeleine Westerhout resigns after discussing children

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Friday that longtime aide Madeleine Westerhout abruptly resigned because she spoke to reporters about his children.

Trump’s former personal assistant, long considered a gatekeeper in the White House, unexpectedly left her job this week after saying “things about my children” during an off-the record dinner with reporters in New Jersey, Trump said.

“It was too bad,” Trump, who is traveling to Camp David for the weekend, told reporters gathered on the South Lawn. “I wish her well.”

Westerhout’s departure drew significant media attention Friday because of her close relationship with the president. She was among the first staffers who joined Trump in the White House in 2017.

Trump called her comments “a little bit hurtful.”

Trump denied reports that Westerhout had relayed critical remarks Trump made about his children to reporters – specifically Tiffany Trump. The president said he intended to speak with his youngest daughter from Camp David.

“I love Tiffany,” he said.
