Read his opening remarks to Congress

Attorney General William Barr heads before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday where he will face questions from Congress for the first time since delivering the results of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s efforts to sway the 2016 election in President Donald Trump’s favor.

Democrats have been skeptical of Barr’s handling of the inquiry, particularly his summary of the report’s principal conclusions ahead of the full report’s release.

Barr defended his handling of the report in prepared remarks ahead of the hearing, saying “the record speaks for itself.” He said it “was in the public interest” to announce ahead of the report’s release that the investigation did not find a “provable crime” regarding Russian conspiracy, and he stood by his determination that the president had not committed obstruction of Justice.
