Shawn Johnson, Andrew East share hopeful pregnancy update after scare

After sharing an emotional video about a couple of potential issues with their first pregnancy following a miscarriage and pregnancy announcement in April, Shawn Johnson and Andrew Eastman said their prayers have been answered.

The couple announced optimistic news in a new video this weekend after “praying for our baby literally every five minutes of the day.”

In a video on their YouTube channel, “The East Family,” Johnson, 27, said that genetic testing was “negative for any chromosomal anomaly, which meant genetically our baby is healthy. Which is huge.”

The complications: ‘Welcome to parenthood’

Johnson, an Olympic medalist, and East, who plays for the Washington Redskins, have been sharing the entirety of their pregnancy journey – from miscarriage to positive pregnancy test.

A few days ago, the couple posted a stirring video on their channel in which they explained that the baby’s kidneys “were really dilated, underdeveloped, but dilated, so retaining a bunch of fluid.”

Johnson also said she has a two-vessel umbilical cord, which only happens in about 1 in 100 pregnancies, according to the March of Dimes. (Most umbilical cords have three vessels: two arteries and one vein.) The risks are greater for this type of umbilical cord and could be a marker for a baby that has Down Syndrome, a genetic disorder or a chromosomal anomaly.

Johnson said after the 20-week ultrasound that they don’t care if the baby is a boy or a girl, which they are keeping a surprise: “We love our baby so much and not being able to do anything for them was the worst feeling in the world. Welcome to parenthood.”

‘Congratulations’

Johnson said the doctor encouraged the couple to get genetic testing, which they did.

In a follow-up video posted Saturday, the couple said the doctor rushed results.

“Congratulations, your genetic testing came back negative. Yay!” Johnson said. “I think I sat in the garage for 45 minutes minutes reading that one line over and over and over and over again” before sharing it with her father and husband.

Upon hearing the news, East, 27, picked up Johnson’s dad and gave him a bear hug before embracing his wife for a long time.

“I think we were celebrating because there was so much fear that we felt like was relieved when we found out the baby didn’t have the predicted complications,” East said. “And not that we wouldn’t have been excited had they had complications to have a baby but it definitely changes things. I think we were just fearful.”

The new video also addresses their 24-week ultrasound appointment, in which East said they learn their baby’s kidneys are a normal size and appear to be “growing great.”

Johnson said she was relieved that was one more complication they could check off.

“I feel like I can breathe for the first time in four weeks,” Johnson said, noting that the next appointment is in four weeks.

East added he was grateful for the sharing of stories by the vlog community.

“Honestly, we are so thankful we are able to share it with you guys, and you guys receive it so well,” he said. “I feel there are a lot of people out there who watch us and are invested in us because we do share this stuff. And I feel this community we’ve formed is really there to help each other out and to encourage each other and give advice or love when somebody encounters something unexpected like we just did.”

Johnson said it was the stories that helped her the most with her miscarriage and learning about having a two-vessel umbilical cord.

“We are humbled, we are praying, we are taking one day at a time,” Johnson added.
