Taylor Swift’s ‘Me’ shines at Billboard Music Awards

Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie joined forces for the first time ever on stage at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards Wednesday to give “ME!” – Swift’s brand-new single – its live debut, in a cute performance with plenty of call-outs to the tune’s music video.

The show opened with a drum corps clad in pink to match Swift’s pink, white and gold one-shoulder sequined dress. Swift emerged and reenacted the briefcase dance from her music video with a team of dancers before Urie swooped in on a Mary Poppins-style flying umbrella. The duo then broke into a routine of choreographed dance moves, also referencing their music video, ending with more airborne umbrella dancers spinning from the roof and some confetti for good measure.

Before the performance, Swift joined E! to answer questions from fans in a pre-taped video.

First, she talked about filming the “ME!” music video with Urie, which premiered Friday.

“The most fun part about filming the music video for ‘ME!’ was probably fighting with Brendon in French,” she said in the video, which aired during E! News’ red carpet coverage ahead of the awards show. “We laughed so hard trying to get our pronunciation right, and trying to keep the cats on the couch. There were so many funny things in that scene.”

She also chatted about the new addition to her family – Benjamin Button, her new cat. The pet joins her other cats, Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey.

“Benjamin is like… sort of like exactly what you think a little brother would be,” she said, saying that Meredith and Olivia “now both have a tiny little kitten pouncing on them,” describing them as “marshmallows just jumping on each other, just puff balls.”

Swift looked like a sugary-sweet confection on the red carpet earlier in the night, wearing a ruffled lavender minidress by Raisa & Vanessa that was perfectly suited to the pastel color scheme of her new album.

Swift also showed off her dates to the BBMAs in a tweet posing with the legendary Paula Abdul. No, not her boyfriend Joe Alwyn – two of her three cats, with her newly-acquired Benjamin Button on the left, and her longtime pet Olivia Benson on the right.

Speaking with ABC’s Robin Roberts on the night before the single’s Friday release, Swift said that “ME!” is about “embracing your individuality and really celebrating it and owning it.”

“I think that with a pop song, we have the ability to get a song stuck in people’s heads, and I just want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves,” she added.
