Tennessee still No. 1 in men’s basketball coaches poll ahead of Duke

The last time Tennessee held the No. 1 ranking in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll, the Vols’ stay during the 2008 season lasted just one week. They get to keep the top spot a bit longer this time.

The Vols survived an upset bid in overtime at Vanderbilt, the same school that knocked them from their perch 11 years ago, then handled West Virginia over the weekend to retain the No. 1 position for a second week. Tennessee received all but one of the 32 first-place votes.

The next three teams in the poll also held serve. Duke remains No. 2, claiming one first place nod, followed again by Virginia and Gonzaga.

Michigan vaults back into the top five, followed by a streaking Kentucky. Nevada stays put at No. 7.

Michigan State, the highest-rated squad to take a loss during the week, drops three places to No. 8 after Sunday’s setback at Purdue. Marquette checks in at No. 9, its highest position since the conclusion of the 2012 campaign. North Carolina rounds out the top 10.

Purdue, thanks to that Michigan State victory, rejoins the poll at No. 18. No. 19 LSU and No. 23 Wisconsin also move in after successful weeks.

Auburn, Mississippi and Florida State each drop out of the Top 25.
