What we know about active shooter in Charlotte

Reports of shots fired on a North Carolina university campus Tuesday prompted a lockdown and chaotic scenes in Charlotte.

University officials issued an alert at 5:50 p.m. ET telling students to stay in a safe location. Gun shots were reported near a building on campus, according to an alert. 

Here’s what we know so far:

University issues lockdown

UNC Charlotte issued a campus lockdown late Tuesday afternoon, saying that shots had been fired.

As of 7:43 p.m. ET, the lockdown was still in effect.

How many victims are there?

Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency said on Twitter that two people were found dead at the scene, two others have life-threatening injuries and two others have injuries that are not life-threatening. They said the numbers could change.

It was not immediately clear whether the victims were students.

Where is the University of North Carolina Charlotte? 

UNC Charlotte is northeast of downtown Charlotte.

Is a suspect in custody?

One person is in custody, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Are classes at UNC Charlotte still in session?

Tuesday marked the last day of classes before final exams begin Thursday, according to the university academic calendar. 

Where can students meet with their families?

To reunite students with their families, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department told people to meet at a shopping center about a mile from campus. 

Law enforcement is sweeping campus buildings, according to UNC Charlotte’s alert system.

Students and faculty are told to follow officer commands.
